Three Stops in Hackney

Oliver in oatmeal soft-washed cotton button-down shirt, charcoal plaid boxy brushed-wool plaid overshirt jacket with patch pockets, worn open, dark wash denim relaxed straight-leg jeans and dark brown lace-up combat boots.

Oliver is drawn wearing these pieces — an illustration, styled as the items shown, not a photograph of them.

Model: Oliver — non-fiction editor at an independent publisher, London

Why it works

The palette stays quiet and low-lit, the way a pub at ten o'clock looks. Charcoal plaid, oatmeal, dark indigo and dark brown sit together without any color asking for attention. The pattern in the brushed wool adds interest, so nothing else has to.

The proportions are easy on purpose. A boxy overshirt worn open over a soft-washed shirt, with relaxed straight-leg jeans below, gives a looser, more textured outline than Oliver's weekday clothes. The combat boots ground the wider leg and can handle wet cobbles, sticky floors and the walk between three pubs.

It suits Oliver because there are only four pieces and each one does a job. The overshirt is the warm layer and the only detail, the shirt is the base, and the jeans and boots are things he already wears weekly. The overshirt comes off and hangs on a chair at the second stop, and the outfit still holds together.

How it goes together

A roomy, textured take on Oliver's usual shirt and jeans: a charcoal plaid wool overshirt worn open over an oatmeal button-down, with dark denim and dark brown combat boots built for a long night on foot in east London.
